I was born in Detroit and moved to the burbs. Remember my buddy and I would flip a quarter into the till on the bus and sit under the Spirit of Detroit, eating fried chicken. During the 1967 Detroit riot, I was living at Detroit Teen Challenge. Armed guards on ever corner. left 43 dead, 1,189 injured, over 7,200 arrests, and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed. Five years later I entered the ministry. I went back to Detroit to minister in a church. Reaching through the bars I knocked on the door. A rough voice replied “Hoo dare?” I replied “I'm your guest speaker.” When he opened the door, there stood a very large man sporting an accessory on his hip.
After the service a 21 yr. old man said to me “You is the whitest black preacher I ever did heeah.”
